Culture and the State
From the end of the eighteenth century to the late nineteenth century, a remarkable convergence takes place in Europe between theories of the modern state and theories of culture. Culture and the State explores that theoretical convergence in relation to the social functions of state and cultural institutions, showing how cultural education comes to play the role of forming citizens for the modern state. It critiques the way in which materialistic thinking has largely taken the concept of culture for granted and failed to grasp its relation to the idea of the state.

Baptists and Business
This study of Baptist businessmen from Jarvis Street Baptist Church in Toronto breaks new ground. The challenges to faith exerted by the arrival of a new materialistic social ethic and a business-dominated culture in the last half of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries has received little attention from Canadian historians. Instead, historians have primarily focused on religious leaders and intellectual challenges to faith. This study examines the sociocultural challenges that confronted one group of central Canadian Baptist businessmen from 1848 to 1921. Essentially, the findings offered here are used to sustain the argument that the rise of business and consumerism helped to secularize the beliefs, values, and practices of Baptist businessmen. Furthermore, the effects of secularization were profound on both the personal and church community levels.
Reframing Technology
For over a hundred years, technological change has been framed using a simple narrative: technology drives history. Reframing Technology challenges this idea of technological determinism through metahistorical and literary analyses that locate the birth of contingent frameworks in the historiography of technology in and around the 1930s. The book also traces how the formal discipline of the History of Technology was remarkably preconfigured by four North American authors who were not professional historians, Thorstein Veblen, Stuart Chase, Lewis Mumford, and Marshall McLuhan. They are considered as a continuum and are put in dialogue despite their training in different disciplines. Their work is then linked up with the emergence of formal and institutional inquiry into narratives of technology at the end of the twentieth century. The ideas in the book are applied to current discussions about the future of technology and artificial intelligence. The book’s main argument is that, as the authors listed above suggest, we need to think beyond "the machine," and reframe technology as a cultural practice, rather than thinking of it as an object or a tool.
